Application Notes on Elemental Analysis of Biofuels by ICP-AES
Jul 01 2009
Two Application Notes available from Horiba Scientific (France) describe the use of ICP-AES for the determination of elements in biofuels. The first describes the use of the new easy-to-use Activa-S for the determination of P, S, Na, K, Ca and Mg in biodiesel to comply with US and EU Specifications such as ASTM D6571, EN 14214 and DIN 51606. The report demonstrates excellent Limits of Quantitation that readily meet the Specifications due in good part to the use of a robust radial torch with the unique Total Plasma View.
The second note focuses on the determination of 34 elements in bio-ethanol. Direct analysis of the volatile ethanol was made possible by a Peltier effect cooled cyclonic spray chamber coupled to the renowned ULTIMA 2 ICP-AES Spectrometer. Again the unique Total Plasma View of the torch in a radial configuration provided excellent data. In addition to the ICP Spectrometers for elemental analysis, HORIBA also offers S analysis with the new SLFA-UV21, which follows the ASTM D5453 UV fluorescence technique and ISO 20846 while offering a new level of sensitivity to low-level sulfur, easy operation, and unparalleled precision and accuracy.Digital Edition
