Transitgas pipeline could flow south to north
Feb 29 2012
New operator of the Transitgas natural gas pipeline Fluxswiss has said that it could flow south to north in the future, saying they are committed to invest in the pipeline.
The Transitgas natural gas pipeline flows from Switzerland to Italy, and new plans would see gas being transported through Italy into Switzerland and to western Europe. Walter Peeraer, managing director of Belgian transmission system operator (TSO) Fluxys commented after an event in Bern, Switzerland that the company is "committed to investing in the project to enable south-to-north flows and will team up with the Italian and German gas system operators Snam Retegas and Open Grid Europe to facilitate the project," ICIS reported.
The change in gas flow direction is considered to be the only option for the pipeline, and all parties involved are currently in talks over the change. Gas flowing to Italy through Algeria or Libya, or even from the South Stream could be used to make it flow into the north of Europe.
