Sulphur analysis
Application Note: Sulphur in Crude by ASTM 4294
Dec 06 2011
Applied Rigaku Technologies (USA) announces a new method for the analysis of sulphur in crude oil in compliance with ASTM D4294. Application Note #1149 demonstrates the effectiveness of the Rigaku NEX QC benchtop EDXRF analyser for the analysis of sulphur (S) in crude oil, petroleum oils and fuels by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry.
Sulphur is one of the most toxic elements in crude products relative to the refining process. As more stringent environmental regulations are enacted globally, demand for low-sulphur fuels is expected to increase. Reliably characterising the sulphur content of crude enables verification of the various feedstocks at the refinery and optimum blending ratios when blending different crudes to meet a desired sulfur concentration.
The method described details the ability of the NEX QC to yield excellent results for the measurement of crude oil and other heavy petroleum oils in compliance with international standards. Performance demonstrated is applicable to light and heavy crude oils, residual oil and bunker fuels.
