ATEX and IECEx Flame-Proof Versions Now Added To Pressure Sensor Platform
Nov 30 2012
With the introduction of two new flame-proof versions, the UNIK 5000 pressure sensing platform from the Sensing business of GE Measurement & Control (USA) can now offer accurate, reliable and high integrity solutions for an even wider range of pressure sensing applications. The new UNIK 5800 and UNIK 5900 sensors will allow customers greater choice when faced with the rigorous requirements of operations in hazardous zones. They provide a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to pressure gauges and switches, especially in the oil and gas and process sectors.
“Our UNIK 5000 platform already carries intrinsic safety and FM and FMc certifications,” explains Sean Coyle, product manager at GE, “The introduction of our new flame-proof versions means that we can now offer an extended range of options for hazardous zone applications to meet individual customer requirements, in pressures from 3.5 bar to 700 bar."
The new products have been engineered to allow them to be certified for ATEX and IECEx flame-proof approval. These certifications require that the construction of the product is sufficient to contain any explosion or flame within the product to prevent any spread which might cause a major explosion. As a result, flame proof certification does not require the installation of barriers or safe area power supplies, although there is a requirement to install suitable pressure-resistant equipment, such as cable conduits. The choice of hazardous area equipment depends very much on the application and flame proof products can often offer the most cost-effective solution.
The UNIK 5800 and UNIK 5900 are in-line male and female conduit versions respectively and the UNIK 5900 is available in long or short body designs. Each combines silicon technology and analogue circuitry with modular design and lean manufacturing techniques to offer custom-built pressure sensors from standard components, matching accuracy and specification to meet individual requirements. This modular design feature has already contributed greatly to the success of the UNIK 5000 platform, allowing short delivery times for a high quality, robust sensing solution.
