'Original Bourdon' remains very strong in the oil & gas industry

Baumer still continues manufacturing the famous Bourdon Tube adding on modern production and quality methods which provide significant benefits for the oil and gas industry. Sascha Engel, Head of Sales & Marketing, Process Instrumentation at Baumer explains the fascinating combination:

  • 'Bourdon' as a Baumer brand. What is behind this?

Engel: Baumer acquired the Bourdon-Haenni company in 2005. The technology, product range and exacting quality standards stem from the 160-year Bourdon tradition, and therefore they are an excellent match for Baumer. In the course of many customer visits worldwide, we became aware of how strongly established the original Bourdon brand is in the minds of people in the oil, gas and classical EPC industries. We want to live up to these expectations.

  • What advantages does this 160 year-old technology have, and how does it fit into the Baumer portfolio?

Engel: Baumer's background is classic presence sensor technology. So for decades we have primarily been involved in electronics at the very highest level. And suddenly a technology from classical mechanics is added. What is the connection? We have noticed how conservatively, in the best sense of the word, the market represents the mechanical instrumentation area. But this certainly does not mean that we can't be innovative. But in many industries mechanical instrumentation dominates the view of what is proven and determines the suppliers. Including the well proven Bourdon tube. And now we are combining them; total precision and the related quality. That's why Bourdon fits into the Baumer family so well.

  • Bourdon technology is also used by other companies. What makes Baumer different?

Engel: Original Bourdon isn't just a phrase, but a technology recognised worldwide. But there is only one company that owns the original; only Baumer. And with this technology, the worldwide bandwidth of our product portfolio, from the classic manometer to the smartest electronics, is completely in-house. We develop and produce the widest product range for the markets, drawing from the fields of encoders, presence sensors, camera technology and process sensors, and are therefore able to provide significantly more features than our competitors.

  • In your opinion, how important is the Bourdon brand in the oil and gas industry?

Engel: That is precisely where original Bourdon is at home. And with the original Bourdon, we at Baumer also see ourselves represented with a very strong focus. Original Bourdon remains very strong in this industry. That's why we are so proud to be able to use the original Bourdon name as the flagship for the oil and gas industry.

  • Bourdon products are only part of Baumer's overall range of products for the oil and gas sector. What else can customers expect from you?

Engel: We are a very broad-based supplier. We keep a globally operating team ready specifically for EPC business in the oil and gas sector. Of course, we also keep corresponding products available for this service, which is complemented in each of the individual countries by a Baumer branch or contractual partner. This includes seals, which can be combined with every well-known field transmitter and refined. In addition, we naturally offer special materials and technologies especially for the seals. Alongside the classic mechanical products, we are also strongly represented in drilling technology. Customers value both our encoders and the unique process sensors from the force/strain and pressure transmitter areas, which offer the highest reliability and precision.
