When you don't know what to expect

Unknown dangers await us in many working environments. This is especially true for gases whose presence is often not detected until it’s already too late. But there are various different measures you can take to be prepared as well as possible and thus increase personal safety.

Good preparation is required

Toxic and combustible gases as well as divergences in the oxygen levels (both too low and too high) pose dangers to people. Precisely assessing the situation for dangers is therefore crucial and should be done before each work assignment. This is, of course, especially important in situations you are anticipating dangers from gases to arise, such as firefighting operations, maintenance personnel entering a sewer or entering hazardous material storage. If you know in advance that a certain gas will pose a direct risk, monitoring for this specific gas or danger, such as lack of oxygen, can be sufficient. However, in most cases, it is more complicated than that.

Monitoring several dangers at once

A person wearing a portable multi-gas detector correctly (i.e. in the area of the air the wearer is breathing in) can increase their own safety and that of the people around them while also being able to concentrate on the task at hand. This will facilitate the prevention of several risks, stemming from different toxic and combustible gases as well as lack of oxygen, at once with only one gas detection device. Always analyze the situation first

If you need to enter confined spaces or containers for your operational processes, they must be analyzed before and after entering, as part of risk prevention measures.
