ASTM D7900:  Boiling Point Distribution from C1 to C100 Boiling Point Distribution of Crude Oil with Speciation of Biomarkers to Phytane, on One Gas Chromatograph (GC)

The accuracy of the boiling point distribution by method ASTM D7169 is compromised by solvent interference/quenching in the C4 to C8 boiling point range.  The new “merge” method, ASTM D7900, does a good job of providing enhanced accuracy to the boiling point distribution;  however, D7900 requires two analyses on two gas chromatographs.  The distribution and speciation from  a Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA) for C9 minus backflushing C9 plus so these analytes do not enter the DHA column,  and a classical D7169 for C9 plus. The results from the two analyses are then mathematically merged to obtain the boiling point distribution of the entire crude oil.

This eLearning session will discuss ASTM D7900 and an innovative multidimensional technique of performing this analysis of stabilized crude oils on a single GC with the necessary improvements in accuracy.
