Detecting benzene and total aromatic compounds (TACs) within petrochemical environments
Oct 16 2013
Ion Science introduces an innovative dual monitoring solution for total aromatic compounds, including benzene for optimal worker safety. The CubTAC personal PID monitor + Tiger Select handheld screening device manages the risk of exposure to benzene enhancing safety, productivity and providing a cost effective alternative to traditional testing methods.
Benzene is a critical industrial chemical which is commonly found throughout the petrochemical industry. However, it is extremely hazardous and a recognised human carcinogen. Traditionally, it has not been possible to collect accurate real-time measurements due to a lack of available technology. However, the combination of the Ion Science CubTAC personal PID monitor plus the Tiger Select handheld screening device now make this a reality.
Small, light and highly sensitive, the CubTAC provides continuous personal protection quickly alerting workers to total aromatic compounds (TACs), including benzene with its audible, vibrating and flashing LED alarm. If CubTAC alarms, TACs exceed 1 ppm indicating benzene concentrations may be above safe levels.
Tiger Select can then be used in TAC mode to confirm the reading. The addition of a pre-filter benzene tube can be attached to the Tiger Select instrument to give a benzene specific reading. Should the Tiger Select benzene reading exceed the regulatory limit, a short-term exposure limit (STEL) can be immediately initiated. This three-step process provides instantaneous TAC readings and minimises tube usage when benzene levels are low.
Throughout the measurement process, Tiger Select continues to display real-time data, ensuring the final reading represents the full value of actual benzene present. Benzene concentrations are displayed down to ppb levels, giving you the most accurate, reliable data you can count on.
Both CubTAC and Tiger Select incorporate the unique ION Science PID sensor technology with Anti-contamination design and humidity resistance for extended operation in difficult working environments.
