Reduce emissions in National Go Green Week

This week is National Go Green Week - an attempt by campaigners to ensure Brits recognise the impact their actions have on the environment.

It is hoped that individuals will begin to take responsibility for their actions and live in a more eco-friendly way.

As part of the challenge, Peter Rodger from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered a number of tips on how to reduce emissions when driving.

Firstly, he has advised drivers to brake as infrequently as possible.

Instead of sharply braking, drivers should slow down and take their foot off the accelerator earlier when approaching a queue, junction or roundabout.

In addition, simply slowing down in general will considerably reduce emissions.

If drivers stick to the speed limit, they will be making a far more eco-friendly journey.

"There’s a significant saving made by doing 70 instead of 80, as well as avoiding any risk of speeding fines," he advised.

He continued by saying that, if possible, drivers should aim to use block gear charging, (e.g. 2nd to 4th when accelerating, or 5th to 2nd when decelerating) as it is more fuel-efficient than working through all of the gears.

Not only will this significantly reduce emissions, it will also save the motorist a great deal of money, according to Mr Rodger.

"We’ve all got better things to spend our money on than petrol. Green driving can save you up to 15 per cent on your bills, as well as reducing your carbon emissions," he claimed.

All of these tips reduce emissions, while also saving on petrol money.

Finally, Mr Rodger advised that drivers check their vehicle regularly for things like tyre tread depth and pressure. An efficient car will emit less emissions.

"Remove excess weight, including roof racks, car clutter and unnecessary items in the boot. The more weight you carry in the car, the more fuel you’ll consume," he concluded.
