GPS could help reduce emissions

Following the government's 2020 emission targets, which hopes to see an an overall 20 per cent improvement in the EU's energy efficiency, a number of companies have set out to monitor their own efficiency levels.

One way that companies have chosen to do this is by implementing a GPS tracking system.

Fleet companies in particular have seen particular benefits when using GPS to track their car's energy efficiency.

Fleet vehicles - a group of motor vehicles owned or leased by a business - are known for emitting lots of harmful gases into the atmosphere.

Simply put, cars contribute around 70 per cent of the overall emissions into the environment, so consequently groups of cars are responsible for a huge amount of the damage done in Europe.

However, with tracking systems such as GPS, fleet companies are able to get their emissions under control.

In a survey by Green Fleet, 68 per cent of companies claimed that they have an environmental goal for their fleets, while 65 per cent of fleets measuring emissions are using actual fuel data.

Many of the companies surveyed said that a GPS tracking system was incredibly beneficial for them to monitor emissions.

Other ways that the Green Fleet survey found that companies tackle the problem of gas emissions is by improving driving behaviour.

In addition, 74 per cent of fleet managers have said that they have given their drivers specific emission reduction targets, as well as educating them on the problem so that they can make decisions for themselves as to how best to reduce emissions.

According to Fieldtechnologies.com, installing a GPS tracking system in your vehicles could save your company money and reduce your fleet vehicles’ emissions.

"Many fleet managers, however, have reported cost savings and reduced emissions after having installed a GPS tracking system," it claimed.
