Easy XRF Analysis for Sulphur in Petroleum Products
Jan 23 2013
There is a continuing and increasing demand for a rapid, simple and cost-effective measurement of Sulphur in a wide range of petroleum products including automotive, marine and aviation fuels.
Benchtop EDXRF instruments such as the world renown Lab-X3500 and associated X-Supreme8000, can be found in many refinery laboratories/testing houses, with the instrument often operated by production staff on a 24/7 basis, giving accurate results conforming to globally accepted test methods, e.g. ASTM D4294, ISO20847, and the new ISO13032,etc
Both instruments use the analytical technique of Energy-Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) which is well regarded for its excellent performance, versatility, ease of use, speed, and cost-effectiveness.
At present there are two main types of Sulphur analysis in petroleum products:
- Ultra low Sulphur, often called zero Sulfur fuel, with concentration levels at or below 10mg/kg, (or 15mg/kg in the USA)
- Higher Sulphur concentration values from 50mg/kg to 5%.
Within the oil supply system from shipment of crude oil to refining, distribution, storage and subsequent use in automobiles, aboard ships etc, quality control/assurance is required at almost every stage of the process.
The Lab-X3500 and X-Supreme8000 are both field proven instruments that can measure Sulphur from a few ppm to high % covering all analytical requirements within three easy steps.
The Lab-X3500 Sulphur Analyser is especially suitable for rapid and simple Sulphur analysis. With thousands of installations worldwide, the instrument is field proven for its robust, reliable yet easy to use design. Used by most leading oil companies, it can be found in refinery laboratories, testing houses, terminals and mobile laboratories; anywhere where dependable analysis is required. Its easy to replace safety window avoids instrument downtime.
Additionally, the Lab-X3500 requires little or no sample preparation and is operated with a simple ‘one touch’.
The benchtop X-Supreme8000 combines performance with flexibility, allowing Sulphur analysis from a few ppm to 5% plus the ability to measure other elements such as Cl in oil Ni, V in fuel oil and Pb in gasoline etc.
It comes with an integrated 10 position sample carousel with integrated PC for minimum bench space and unattended operation.
Large, easy to read colour graphics, and the optional touch screen display enhance clarity and ease of use.
