Ignition Quality Tester (IQT™) continues to deliver highly precise derived cetane number measurements.
Dec 03 2019
With CFR Engines Inc.’s (CFR) acquisition of Advanced Engine Technology’s Ignition Quality Tester (IQT™) technology in August 2019, the fuel industry can expect to continue to receive the benefits of the IQT’s precise Derived Cetane Number (DCN) measurement capability. The IQT provides ignition quality measurements for diesel and alternative fuels in accordance with specification test methods ASTM D6890, EN 15195, and IP498.
As a technology leader, CFR’s IQT is a robust constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) instrument, with a well-established correlation to CFR’s F5 Cetane Rating Unit. As a direct combustion measurement alternative to the cetane engine, it features proven durability, an expanded measurement range (31.5 to 75.1 DCN in ASTM D6890), precise results, and a quick automated test procedure. Its compact size, light weight, low operating costs, and quiet operation make it an ideal solution for laboratories that wish to expand their fuel testing capabilities, with an instrument backed by CFR’s proven industry experience.
The IQT can be used to quickly and accurately determine the DCN of a wide range of diesel fuels and fuel components, including alternative fuels such as FAME-based biodiesels, renewable diesels, and XTL fuels. IQT test method EN 15195 is the referee test method for Cetane Number in the CEN European Standard EN 15940 for paraffinic diesel fuel from synthesis or hydrotreatment. Thus, it is the preferred choice for testing high cetane synthetic diesel fuels such as HVO and GTL. The IQT is also sensitive to small amounts of cetane improvers, allowing fuel producers and distributors to reduce their costs by making more effective use of expensive fuel cetane improver additives.
To serve the interests of the global DCN measurement market, CFR has re-established and is actively carrying on the business of sales, service, and support for the IQT via a new subsidiary, CFR Engines Canada ULC. To ensure that existing and future IQT customers receive the same excellent quality of product and support as in the past, AET’s core staff and production infrastructure were retained by CFR Engines Canada ULC. CFR is committed to continued product enhancements in fuel testing and welcomes the opportunity to address the need for global CVCC instrument requirements.
