5.4M Order for Ultrasonic Flow Meters

Cameron’s Measurement Systems (UK) has been awarded a $5.4M order from Keystone Pipeline Partnerships, a subsidiary of TransCanada Corporation and ConocoPhillips, to provide 39 20” Caldon LEFM 280Ci Ultrasonic Meters to the Keystone Pipeline Project. The 3,456-kilometre (2,148-mile) Keystone Pipeline will transport oil from Alberta to Midwest markets in the United States.

The meters will be used at each of the 39 pumping stations along the length of the system and will measure the oil as the pump discharge header is reduced from 30-plus to 20 inches. The measurement data will be used to control the flow and pressure through the pumps to meet operational requirements and optimize power consumption of the pumps. Additionally, data from the meters will provide input into the pipeline leak detection system

Caldon meters use advanced transit time ultrasonic technology to determine measurements based on the movement of sound waves through fluids. Cameron, through its business unit Caldon Ultrasonics, has been a leader in the development of the technology for the nuclear and defense industries since the late 1960’s. In 2000, Caldon successfully launched a line of ultrasonic meters designed specifically for the oil and gas industry.

The Keystone order represents a significant milestone for Cameron as the company executes a strategy to expand its technology into custody transfer applications. “Over the past three years we have acquired two best-in-class companies in Caldon, Inc. and Jiskoot Limited. Our intention is to provide global oil and gas players with measurement solutions that can deliver a calculated return on investment,” said Pat Holley, Vice President of the Measurement Systems division.
