Who Are the Largest Oil and Gas Companies?

When it comes to powering the modern world, oil and gas are indispensable natural resources. From cars, buses, trains and boats to factories, power stations, planes and machinery, the two resources are in constant demand. But who supplies the planet with these two incredibly valuable substances? Read on for an overview of the world’s largest oil and gas companies.

Exxon Mobil – USA

Based in Irving, Texas, Exxon Mobil is the world’s largest multinational oil and gas corporation. The company rakes in a huge US$496,255 a year in revenue and is also the world’s second largest publically traded company. The corporation was formed in 1999 when Exxon and Mobil merged to create a supermajor.

Royal Dutch Shell – Netherlands

More commonly referred to as Shell, this Dutch corporation is the second most profitable oil and gas company on the planet, enjoying US$484,489 million in annual revenue. The company was born after Royal Dutch Petroleum and British based Shell Transport & Trading merged.

BP – United Kingdom

Formerly known as British Petroleum, BP is Britain’s largest oil and gas corporation. It operates in all sectors of the industry, including exploration, production, refining, marketing and distribution. As the world’s third largest supermajor it generates annual revenue of US$386,463.

Sinopec – China

With annual revenue of US$375,214, Sinopec is China’s leading multinational oil and gas company. The corporation is based out of Beijing although it’s also listed in Hong Kong, Shanghai and New York.

China National Petroleum Corporation – China

As China’s second supermajor, China National Petroleum Corporation generates US$352,338 worth of annual revenue. It is a state-owned corporation and is the nation’s largest integrated energy company.

Chevron Corporation – USA

Based in California, Chevron Corporation is the USA’s second largest multinational oil and gas company. Its presence reaches to over 180 countries where it is actively engaged in every sector of the industry. This proactive approach results in revenue of US$245,621 a year.

Conoco Phillips – USA

Another American giant, Conoco Phillips bases itself out of Houston, Texas. It is the largest exploration and production company on the planet, reaping annual revenue of US$237,272.

Total – France

France makes an appearance at number eight on the list, with integrated oil and gas company, Total. It operates in a range of different sectors, including exploration, production, power generation, refining, marketing and trading. These pursuits earn Total revenue of US$ 231,580 per year.

Gazprom – Russia

Gazprom is an open joint stock company which derives its name from the Russian words ‘gazovaya’ and ‘promyshlennost.’ It is based in Moscow and enjoys status as the world’s largest extractor of natural gas. Its total annual revenue is estimated at US$157,830.

Eni – Italy

Eni is based in Rome and generates US$153,676 worth of annual revenue. It is Italy’s largest industrial company and derives its name from the acronym ‘Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi,’ which translates to national hydrocarbons authority. It is co-owned by the government, the state treasury, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (a national bank) and the People’s Bank of China.
