bp acquisition of GBF moves them another step closer to becoming a fully integrated energy company

bp recently acquired a 30% stake in Green Biofuels Ltd (GBF), the UK’s largest provider of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO). GBF’s products are made from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal oils and fat.  The product range includes HVO Gd+, a low emission advanced HVO fuel - a direct replacement for diesel.

This investment will facilitate GBF’s growth as it works with organisations trying to move away from using traditional diesel fuel in their vehicles, generators, and machinery. This acquisition will expand bp’s global biofuels portfolio and lower carbon solutions for British customers, taking them another step nearer to their strategic aim of growing its bioenergy business while it continues in its transition to be an integrated energy company.

GBF is the UK’s largest provider of HVO, having delivered over 55 million litres of HVO products to UK-based customers since 2020. HVO Gd+, which includes GBF’s additives, can fuel diesel engines without modification or financial expenditure. HVOs have the potential to play a crucial role in supporting lifecycle emission reductions in a variety of industries, offering a commercially viable decarbonisation option for fleet owners, construction companies and vessel operators.

Thanks to HVO fuels, users of diesel engines can expect to save lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by 87% and therefore improve local air quality. In-field and controlled environment independent tests show that, compared to standard diesel emissions, HVO Gd+, which is often made from waste products, achieves up to an 85% drop in particulates and up to 30% less nitrogen oxides emissions.
