Subcommittee on Climate and Community
Apr 01 2021
ASTM International’s environmental assessment, risk management and corrective action committee (E50) has formed a new subcommittee that will focus on climate and community. Professionals with expertise in community issues related to climate impacts and resiliency projects are encouraged to join in developing new standards within this subcommittee.
According to Helen Waldorf, committee vice chair, the group will focus on standards that capture trends in developing industry goals, scientific advancements, and government regulations, creating shorter decision cycles for solutions and faster recognition of common problems.
“Economies and governments are adapting to the ongoing challenges of climate change,” said Waldorf, an environmental trainer. “Part of this transition will include a more explicit economic evaluation of a cleaner environment and actions to promote climate resiliency and response. The new subcommittee will provide a framework for the development of industry standards for community climate responses.”
Waldorf notes standards produced by the new subcommittee, E50.07, will be found useful by:
• Manufacturers and installers of renewable energy generation,
• Power managers,
• Storage and transmission product producers,
• Consulting services that help rehabilitate and rebuild housing, open space and utilities for adaptation and to reduce greenhouse gas and other air pollutants,
• Municipalities, tribes, local planning agencies,
• The military, and more.
ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Please contact ASTM staff manager, Molly Lynyak, at mlynyak@astm.org.
