Automatic Low Sulphur Gas Bag Sampling
Feb 10 2015
In comparison to sampling gas using a pressurised gas cylinder, the use of a tedlar bag is less complicated.
There is no need for restoring the pressure, which is the case when using a cylinder: transportation of the taken samples is easier.
In addition, the use of tedlar bags is cheaper because investment costs are lower and it’s no longer necessary to think about the coating of a gas cylinder.
Components in gas can usually not be measured at the same low level as liquids or liquefied gases because of the physical laws that count. This isn’t a problem for the GBS: it can inject up to 100 mL per sample with a detection limit of 50 ppb with excellent repeatability.
Former gas bag sampling systems were operated manually, sampling only one tedlar bag per analysis. The GBS of TE Instruments (the Netherlands) can be connected up to 10 gas bags at the same time. This not only provides more productivity, but also less contamination and therefore more reliable analysis.
Depending on the specific application, methods in the embedded software can be customised as desired by the operator. Connecting the GBS to the XPLORER combustion analyser, enables the possibility to create a calibration line from a single CRM; different volumes up to 100 mL are selected and introduced automatically.
