Rugged On-line Viscometer for any Fluid in any Process
Apr 24 2009
With the latest high-temperature, high-pressure upgrades, the XL7 on-line viscometer from viscosity measurement specialists Hydramotion Ltd (UK) is now more than ever the instrument of choice for any fluid in any process application. Unaffected by flow rate or bubbles (“slugs”) of air or gas, and with no moving parts to wear out or fail in service, the XL7 viscometer is a field-hardened “bolt-on-and-go” device requiring no on-site calibration and virtually no maintenance. The latest XL7 models can measure any viscosity range from 0 up to 1,000,000,000 centipoise with high sensitivity and excellent repeatability at temperatures up to 500°C in tanks or pipes of any capacity. With no theoretical limit on pressure, units rated at 20,000 psi (1380 bar) or more are now being offered as standard.
Capable of detecting a viscosity as low as 0.02 cP, the high sensitivity of the XL7 is often exploited in multiphase environments (e.g. oil/water/gas) where fluctuations in the measured viscosity accurately reflect phase changes in the fluid surrounding the sensor. The sensor is mounted in the full flow of the fluid, with no need for any special pipework or bypass loops. High-temperature models do not require any special cooling. Measurements are always taken at the process temperature, thereby avoiding inaccuracies arising from localised cooling of the fluid. Readings are taken every 2 seconds and displayed on the separate readout unit (included), which can be located up to 1000 metres from the transducer. Outputs include a 4-20mA analogue
viscosity signal and more comprehensive RS485 serial data. Newly available is a Windows-based PC software package for data capture and logging.
The standard probe is an all-welded construction using 316 stainless steel, but other materials such as special alloys may be used, or the sensor can be provided with a protective coating. Any process fitting can be supplied. Intrinsically safe versions are certified to IEC Ex ia IIC T4 for use in all Hazardous Areas up to and including Zone 0 (equivalent to Class 1 Division 1 Group A). Installed in minutes, the XL7 is ideal for any process application, and particularly for oilfield or other aggressive environments where removal or replacement of the device would be costly, inconvenient or impractical. Pilot-scale models can also be supplied for experimental rigs or laboratory testing facilities.
