Asphalt Testing according to AASHTO T316 and ASTM D4402
Jan 02 2015
In the asphalt industry, continuous quality control is essential to achieve consistently high quality. The viscosity of asphalt samples is a particularly important parameter, as it gives information on pumpability, mixability and workability.
Two closely related standards, ASTM D4402 and AASHTO T316, describe how to measure the apparent viscosity of asphalt binders, bitumen and asphalt at a constant speed of n = 20 rpm and at a temperature of T = +135 °C.
The rotational viscometer RheolabQC from Anton Paar GmbH (Austria) makes viscosity testing reliable and easy. RheolabQC features an EC motor with a 30 times wider torque range than spring-type viscometers. This allows for measuring a broad variety of asphalt samples using the same bob and rotational speed. As the apparent viscosity of asphalt depends strongly on the shear rate this is a crucial feature for truly comparable results. RheolabQC asphalt tests can be performed using the concentric cylinder measuring system CC27 which conforms to ISO 3219.
Precise temperature control is important since the viscosity of asphalt is highly temperature-dependent. RheolabQC features a Peltier temperature device for quick and accurate temperature control and homogenous temperature distribution in the sample. Due to its built-in air cooling it does not require any thermal transfer liquids.
To minimise the cleaning required, Anton Paar provides disposable aluminum measuring cups. This solution guarantees high sample throughput with minimum time required for cleaning.
