Assessing Gasoline Adulteration using IROX 2000 gasoline analyzer
Mar 18 2009
Adulteration of gasoline is a widespread problem, especially in South Asia and Africa. Fuel adulteration most typically is done by blending gasoline with other fuels - such as Kerosene or Diesel - or used oil, vegetable oils and industrial solvents. The portable and fully automatic Grabner Instruments IROX 2000 mid-FTIR gasoline analyzer is the perfect choice for fast and cost effective checks on adulteration in gasoline – directly on site.
When either Kerosene or Diesel is mixed into Gasoline, the octane rating is seriously affected. Some 5-10% Kerosene mixed into Gasoline will decrease the octane number significantly. The IROX 2000 gasoline analyzer delivers results with excellent correlation to ASTM D2699/EN 5163 and ASTM D2700/EN5165, thus enabling the instrument to disclose possible adulteration in samples – within minutes.
In addition, IROX 2000 measures the concentration of 30 parameters of gasoline, among them 14 specific Aromatics including Benzene, Oxygenates, such as Ethanol, Methanol and TAME, Total Aromatics and Olefins. Other key-properties of gasoline, such as volatility and vapor pressure are accurately predicted based on detailed information from the sample’s spectrum. By use of its integrated density meter IROX 2000 is capable of very precise measurement of the density.
With all these parameters measured, adulteration can easily be checked by cross-validation of deviations in several parameters.
