908 Devices Delivers Ballistic GC-MS Analysis Throughout the Hydrocarbon Processing Industry with the Launch of G908
Apr 22 2016
908 Devices, a pioneer of purpose-built analytical devices for chemical analysis, today announced the introduction of G908TM, a universal petrochemical analyzer that combines the company’s patented and award-winning high-pressure mass spectrometryTM (HPMS) technology with the separating power of ballistic gas chromatography (GC). The combination of HPMS and GC provides exceptionally fast compositional analysis, improving efficiency and providing cost savings in use cases that range from exploration and extraction to manufacturing and retail.
For the oil and gas industry, monitoring and evaluating wells, pipelines, feedstocks, processes, and products is absolutely paramount. To perform these tasks, a series of burdensome analytical tests are required to confirm composition and impurity levels. Lab-based GC instruments have been the mainstay for decades, but have limitations as they are slow, large, and gas & power hungry. They also need continuous re-calibration, and often lack the sensitivity and selectivity required to positively identify specific compounds at the molecular level.
With G908, users can rapidly perform testing in-line, at-line, in the laboratory and at remote field-based settings. With this purpose-built petrochemical analyzer, operators of all skill levels can monitor process streams for specific compounds, detect problems quickly and facilitate immediate action. G908 weighs only 28 pounds and enables broader analysis capabilities by positively identifying and quantifying a range of analytes, including low-level impurities, within complex product stream matrices at the point of need.
“Low prices, regulations, market dynamics and workforce fluctuations all continue to impact this global industry. Increasing efficiency and reducing cost is more critical now than ever,” said Dr. Kevin J. Knopp, CEO and co-founder, 908 Devices. “Our company’s mission is to democratize chemical analysis by way of mass spectrometry and with the launch of G908 we are helping customers achieve critical measurements with ease and confidence, leading to substantial time and cost savings.”
The company’s unique approach to mass spectrometry enables G908 to be drastically smaller and more rugged than conventional MS instruments. G908 couples its HPMS technology with the separations power of ballistic gas chromatography (GC), and integrates the analytical capabilities of FID and TCD to form an all-in-one, multi-column, plug-and-go device. This powerful combination eliminates the requirement for large, complex, laboratory and process analyzers in use today.
“With the introduction of G908, operators are now equipped with a smaller, simpler and faster detection device,” said Dr. Graham Shelver, Commercial Leader, Applied Markets, 908 Devices. “By combining ballistic GC with HPMS, we are providing a universal platform for the hydrocarbon processing industry that can be leveraged for in-line, at-line, laboratory and remote field-based qualitative and quantitative analysis that is as easy to use as a conventional GC, but with the levels of sensitivity and molecular compound identification that this industry requires.”
908 Devices has been partnering with Schlumberger and Saudi Aramco since 2013 and 2015 respectively to launch HPMS technology solutions for applications throughout the oil and gas industry. G908 marks the first commercial product made available to the industry.
