BP launches Transocean response operation
Apr 23 2010
Located in the Gulf of Mexico, the platform caught ablaze earlier this week, risking the personal safety of a number of employees working at the site.
According to BP, it has launched a plan to start a relief well if one is required, which will be available to begin operations immediately.
"We have assembled and are now deploying world-class facilities, resources and expertise and can call on more if needed," group chief executive Tony Hayward said.
In addition to a reserve well, the firm also has 32 spill response vessels on standby, while 100,000 gallons of dispersants have been approved for use in the area.
Earlier this week, Transocean said the majority of its staff members escaped the incident safely, but it admitted that the whereabouts of some personnel were as yet unknown.
