Carbon Capture and Storage Technology to be tested at Norwegian Facility
Jul 07 2014
Today, Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) (Norway) and Shell Cansolv have agreed on a contract for testing of Cansolv’s advanced CO2 capture process at the existing amine plant at TCM
Tord Lien, the Norwegian minister of Petroleum and Energy during his visit to TCM today said: “This is a milestone for Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM). I am very content that there is a global interest to use TCM and that new vendors can test out their technologies. That confirms that the facility represents an important contribution to the global efforts to develop cost effective CO2 capture technology.”
The test campaign will be performed using exhaust gas from the Combined Heat and Power Plant at Mongstad, with a focus on process verification and emission control.
The testing is scheduled to start in third quarter 2014 and will last for approximately five months. TCM’s managing director Frank Ellingsen said: “TCM is very happy to be able to perform testing with one of the leading vendors in the CCS industry. Shell Cansolv is supplying their technology to full scale projects coming on stream throughout the world. A prime example is the Integrated CO2 Capture System project at Boundary Dam power station in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. The regenerable Cansolv CO2 Capture System offers a method to remove up to 90% of the CO2 from exhaust gases.”
Technology Centre Mongstad is the world’s largest facility for testing and verifying CO2 capture technologies, and started its operations with two major CCS vendors – Aker and Alstom in Spring 2012. Since then much knowledge has been accumulated to improve technologies and reduce risks.
TCM is a joint venture between Gassnova on behalf of the Norwegian state, Statoil, Shell and Sasol.
