On the laboratory front the two day conference “From Crude to Customer – Developments in Analysis for the Petro Industry Supply Chain” covers a wide range of current research and application topics from the feed crude through to final products. The on-line and in-field process analysis conference “Lasers, Light, Sensors and Separation – Tools and Techniques for Process Based Analysis” will run in parallel over the 2 days covering the latest developments in process-based spectroscopy, chromatography, sensors and advanced data processing and analytics.

In addition, both conferences will feature special sessions on the hot topic of big data and big analysis which will consider strategies, tools and techniques to maximise the value derived from the vast quantities of analytical and process data now routinely available to the industry.

The conferences programmes have been designed to be complementary and delegates will be free to move between the two to mix and match topics of specific interest to them.

“From Crude to Customer – Developments in Analysis for the Petro Industry Supply Chain”
This laboratory focussed conference starts with a morning session on the latest developments in mass spec applications and will feature an opening plenary by Ryan P. Rodgers who is one of the godfathers of Petroleomics and Director of the Future Fuels Institute at Florida State University. Ryan’s opening plenary will be followed by three other leading researchers in this rapidly growing field who will cover the application of different ionisation and sample introduction techniques for the detailed characterisation of a range of petroleum fractions using the cutting-edge instrumentation.

The remainder of the first day will cover alternatives to conventional lab distillation and recent developments in GC and GCxGC applications with a range of detection systems including the barrier ionisation discharge detector, MS and VUV spectroscopy.

The second day begins with the hot topic of Big Data and Big Analysis with a plenary lecture on enhancing the petrochemical space with big analysis by Eric Little, the Chief Data Officer of Osthus and will be followed by talks on specific applications of data analytics including machine learning The morning concludes with talks on the re-emergence of Supercritical Fluid Chromatography as a mainstream analytical technique and the afternoon sessions cover the application of both molecular and atomic spectroscopic techniques for petro-industry related analysis with a particular focus on elemental trace analysis.

Day one of the Process Analysis Conference will open with a Plenary Lecture on advances in on-line process analysis for the petrochemical industry by Alison Nordon from the Centre for Process Analysis and Control Technology (CPACT) which will be followed by sessions on process gas analysis using online techniques such as GC, Optical Feedback Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy, VUV Spectroscopy, and Open Path FTIR.

As with the laboratory conference, the second day begins with the hot topic of Big Data and Big Analysis with the shared plenary lecture Enhancing the Petrochemical Space with Big Analysis by Eric Little, the Chief Data Officer of Osthus. Eric will be followed by a process specific session on big data processing and analytics applications including real-time pollution monitoring and reporting, gas leak detection with interconnected monitors and the use of machine learning for real time hazard event detection. The afternoon session will focus on advances in process-based analysis of liquids using a range of sampling, separation, spectroscopic and sensor-based technologies.

All in all, this is the most comprehensive conference programme so far for PEFTEC and when combined with the industry focussed exhibition provides undoubtedly the best one stop shop for end users in the Petro industries to experience the latest developments and network with experts, vendors and peers.
