Updates to Low Voltage Electric Motors Guide
May 12 2014
ABB (UK) has published an updated version of it 128 pages Motor Guide; the most requested electric motor publication from the company in the UK during the past decade.
Specifically for low voltage electric motors - operating at less than 1,000 V, with maximum 1,000 kW – the guide covers the standards, designs, configurations and general information about installation and maintenance.
The guide targets all motor end users, from design engineers through to maintenance staff, and covers issues such as dimensioning, energy efficiency, mechanical and electrical protection and noise.
Energy efficiency of electric motors is addressed using the latest standards from around the world including IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), CENELEC (the European Committee for Electromechanical Standardisation) and NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association).
The guide details the level of protection required for electric motors operating in specific conditions with high dust levels and moisture through to environments with a high debris or impact risk.
The differences in protection for hazardous areas, where there is a risk of explosion, are included in the guide along with identification of the required nameplate markings and the precautions necessary when specifying a motor in a hazardous area.
Motor installation and maintenance best practices are outlined. This includes inspections and checks that should be considered on delivery, handling, installation and operation. It covers correct mounting steps, alignment guidance and re-lubrication and maintenance requirements.
