Petrol Station Demolition Programme Scoops 7th Gold RoSPA Safety Award

Jun 09 2014

ABB Consulting  has won its 7th consecutive gold award from RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). The award was presented at the society’s Occupational Health & Safety Awards ceremony 2014,  which took place last month.

The award was presented in recognition of the rigorous safety management, standards and performance in 2013 the joint ABB Consulting and ExxonMobil site investigation, demolition and remediation project team.

This is the team’s 10th RoSPA award which includes seven consecutive golds and demonstrates ABB’s longstanding commitment to health and safety.

The award winning project involved the demolition and remediation of petrol stations at city centre locations, where reducing petrol retail margins and rising land prices have made the sale of land financially attractive. To enable the land to be sold, it first needs to be remediated to eliminate any potential historical environmental issues.

David Rawlins, awards manager at RoSPA, a safety charity with a 95-year history, said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention. We congratulate the ABB Consulting and ExxonMobil Demolition and Remediation Project on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”

In delivering the project, ABB Consulting as the project managing contractor has overall responsibility for decommissioning, isolation, CDM Coordination (CDMC), land remediation and project management.

ABB Consulting applied its five stage demolition methodology to the project to provide ExxonMobil with a safe, cost effective and complete solution.

Steve Andrew, leader of ABB Consulting’s Asset Closure team said:  “The RoSPA Gold award is recognition for all involved in the project for their continued hard work and commitment in helping achieve an excellent safety performance working in the potentially hazardous environment of site investigation, demolition and land remediation.”

“Our expertise in decommissioning and remediating redundant chemical plants has helped clients achieve significant benefits from disposal of their potential liabilities, whilst at the same time maximised income to the client from scrap recovery and the sale of plant and equipment.”

ABB Consulting is currently working on a number of other major demolition and remediation projects, including the demolition and remediation of a number of Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas, and Power and Infra-Structure facilities.

Dating back to 1956, the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK. It recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme does not just look at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.
