Shell and BP on top in emerging biofuels market
Mar 21 2012
Recent biofuel analysis by Pike Pulse has found that Shell and BP top the list for publicly-traded international oil companies in the emerging biofuels market.
The 'Pike Pulse Report: Biofuels Commercialization by Oil Majors' takes into consideration ten of the leading oil companies and uses 12 key criteria for biofuel analysis. These include production, geographic reach, supply and demand chains, market strategy, consumer impact and current investments.
The report was conducted in an attempt to provide industry members with a clear view of major oil companies within the biofuel industry. The top ten in order are Shell, BP, Total, Petrobras, Chevron, Statoil, PetroChina, ConocoPhillips, Eni and ExxonMobil.
Senior analyst Mackinnon Lawrence said: "While Pike Research does not perceive any of the oil majors to be outright industry leaders at this stage, several companies have demonstrated a solid foundation for growth and long-term success."
Shell and BP have shown a strong commitment to commercializing advanced biofuel pathways. They currently have a strong near-term position for ethanol production from sugarcane, and have both shown interest in expanding research and development elsewhere.
